A Testimonial By Kerin Myrick
Whenever I thought of home health care, I would think about some of my older relatives with ailments that required a nurse to visit their homes on a weekly basis and never thought about it being a service for new moms.
Earlier this year, in the midst of the covid-19 pandemic, my labor and delivery experience did not go as planned. I ended up having an emergency C-section (for the second time). After the emergency C-section my closure became infected within 48 hours after delivering our baby girl. While still in the hospital I had a second procedure, debridement of the infected tissue. My C-Section wound was reopened and infected tissue removed. My wound was then left open to be cleaned daily until it began to close naturally.
Imagine my disbelief that this was even possible. I had feelings of immediate shock, extreme anxiety on what was next (a 9 pound baby was JUST removed from my womb)- see? Shock, disbelief; overall scared. I didn’t know what was next. I was going to be discharged, with an open wound and only instructions on how to clean and care for a gaping opening in my abdomen (while being a new mom/postpartum).
I shared my feelings with my doctor and asked for some additional resources on help for my wound. The options offered included go into an outpatient clinic 3-4 times a week, enlist the help of my husband/family/friends or have home health assistance a few times a week until my wound closed.
Of course I chose to have some help at home! Below are some highlights on my experience:
- The company verified and screened its home health nurses so I felt safe
- I was able to stay in the comfort of my home
- Scheduling was flexible
- Medical Insurance was able to cover a portion of the costs for the care visits
With home health, the nurse not only checked on my physical well-being and cared for my wound, but had postpartum check-ins with me to ensure I was coping well.
